So yesterday I chased a raccoon around The Commons housing complex.
It all happened when I returned home with Herman, my German roommate, after a mid night shopping at Wall Mart.
After we parked the car; I just got out of it to walk towards the stairs to my apt when I notice a shadow moving. Usually there are many cats walking around The Commons in search for food so I did not pay much of attention to it.
Then suddenly the creature who was casting the shadow popped out in front of me and with amaze I thought to myself "That is one ugly cat".`
One second after I realized that the ugly cat was not but a raccoon, a big raccoon, walking around sniffing the wheels of the car. He was surely looking for food.
I heard stories about raccoons tipping over garbage cans in search for food but unfortunately there were no garbage cans in sight, just me with my bags of groceries.
I was so amazed to see a raccoon for the first time that I did not realize the danger I was going in to, and I started walking closer to the animal to take a closer look...with my bags still hanging from my hands.
The raccoon aware of my presence started looking at me not sure if to trust me or not. Of course his survival instinct told him to walk away, and so he did.
He started running away from me as I got closer and it was when he notice that the bags I was holding might contain food that he became bold and turned around to face me.
It was then that I realized that he might jump me, but still I wanted to record this moment for posterity. So I quickly grabbed my cell phone a started recording a video of the encounter.
In the meantime Herman was yelling me to stay away from him because 80% of the time raccoons might have rabies and if he bit me I would die after a week.
I thought he was exaggerating but by the time Herman finished his Animal Channel speech the raccoon ran away from me again to climb a nearby tree to hide.
After, me and Herman...By the way Hermans real name is Carl Aron Carls. I call him that way because he is Herman the German. Any ways...Me and Herman returned home and I was lucky to still have all my food untouched.
I learned that night that Raccoons are unpredictable creatures when it comes to food and that 80% of them might have rabies.
